Fungus in the Soil

I have been finding some kind of fungus-like growths in the soil near the chicken coop. I found them the first time this summer by the waterer about 2' from the feeder. They grow as individuals and in groups. The growths start about 4" down in the soil and look similar to a mushroom. They are grayish/brown and range in size from 2" to 4" in diameter. They never develop a stem or a defined "cap", the stem remains below soil level. They tend to push up through the soil and sit on the surface until they dry out. They look like bubbles once they reach the surface. Before they dry out they have a green slimy substance inside and what appears to be white seeds. After they dry out everything inside turns into brown powder. Anybody have any idea what these things are and do I need to try to get rid of them, and if so, how? Cheryl

It might be a species of Scleroderma.

If so, don't eat it, but I don't think it should cause any problems.

Here is a link that might be useful: Various fungi including Scleroderma

jekyll, thanks for the info. I think I have poison pigskin puffballs. I've been scooping them out of the soil and carefully disposing of them so that I don't crush them and cause the spores to travel. I've noticed that they are spreading throughout the hen yard, but the hens leave them alone I guess because they are kinda nasty. that web site is a hoot. Thanks. Cheryl
