Just a couple of photos

Well Hi all and sundry ,I thought a would post these couple of piccies for budding hybridists ,show you what happens , first photo is of Vr,fosteriana ' White Bands ' F2 x with itself ( F3 i guess ) bear in mind its still a Vr,fosteriana , but as with all species if you get a select plant out of a batch of selfings ,then self that again you will get more ' select ' plants ,and so you eventually get something that is ' desirable ' for me this is so due to the fact this / or that result will breed paler plants than the original ,so this then is how one could do 2 crosses of say; Vr platynema x Vr, fosteriana ,and cross #1 will give different results to cross #2 because the fosteriana used in both cases may be 2 totally differing clones ,

The next photo is of a hybrid not registered yet ,Vr 'My Butterfly ' this a cross between my Vr,'Milky Way' and Vr, platynema Variegata , its only problem is that it does not make as many leaves as i would like ,or as wide but thats from the Vr,platynema ,wich keeps leaves a bit narrower , but if this plant was selfed than the leaves become broader again ,as the Vr,'Milky way ' influence than becomes dominant ,

This photo is to show that Vr,platynema Variegata is well worth using as it will give nice colours even if the plant itself does not show it , if selfed you will also get more pinks ,well i gotta go ,need to clean more backyard up as i am having visitors ,and i need to fool them into thinking i am dilligent (hahaha ) cheers ,Jack

Jack, very interesting stuff. Please keep the posts coming. But I wonder how long one would have to live to do a proper job of crossing and backcrossing? How long does it take to go from seed to next generation seed with these Vrieseas?

Hi Bromadams ,You would not live that long ,and from seed to the next generation ( and thats only the seed germinating ) is 7 years on averadge ,but you can take a couple of years of if you force the plant to flower by artificial means , its a long term job,but anyone starting now has so much information on hand ,and so many good plants to choose from ,the job is much easier than it was 30 years ago ,you check on FCBS than you can see what gave good results and what did not, Jack

Hi Jack,

Really nice plants and really interesting to see. Love that fosteriana, and that 'Butterfly' sure has some nice colour and patterning. As you say, if you can get more of 'Milky Way's many-leafed, broad rounded leaf characters coming through in the next generation, that will really be something to look forward to. Hi Jack,

Thanks for the valuable hybridizing tips. They won't do me much good at my age, but I'll certainly send them to a couple of younger growers I know.

I know for sure that Kristan and Matt will be taking it all in and filing it for future reference as they both are still young and have lots of years ahead to experiment.
