Solve this mystery...

I bought this brom many years ago from a UC Berkeley plant sale. Usually more burgundy,It's been in too much shade lately. Now,even when I grew it in a warm humid greenhouse where coconuts and coffee along with orchids and cycads plus many more grew like weeds, this brom has always had droopy, floppy, leaves. Always. I was told that it meant it's not healthy-you can see by flowering it's ecstastic-so I don't think it's that. Anybody know what it is?..the label name in pencil faded away long ago. It's a Billbergia right?..so thats all I know.
