My clone of argentea has grass green pups, which slowly turn silvery white as they get bigger, so your plant may well look more typical as it grows. Mine also has some red colouration in the winter.
Hey Patusho, I've been working on this mystery too. I have two plants (which I believe came from the same source originally) that I like to call 'not-argentea'. I think it is either an undescribed species or one that I can't find reference to. At least one of my plants (and again, I think they come from the same source) is from seed that Dorothy Byer either collected or had someone collect for her trying to get the true argentea seed. So as far as I can tell it is from the same region/state/area as argentea, but certainly doesn't look like a proper fit. I think I have seen some people call it argentea rubra or something, but I think that is probably either a good way to sell a plant or just trying to fit it into a named species.

I think the color difference between the two plants is due to the exposure to slightly different winter temp and light, but it could also be slightly different clone (as I am assuming they are seedlings from the same batch of seed). Oh, and excuse the beat up pup, it still hasn't gotten its roots set yet.
Mine get great color in the winter and then in the summer look great green too. The link below is where I show winter and summer pics of the larger plant. At the time I thought it was a fertilizer thing, but It turns out just to be a response to the weather (I think it was based more on my assumptions rather than proper observation). Even though it isn't an argentea, its still a great Hechtia. And I don't know of anyone here seeing it bloom...but then again, not too many people pay attention to the Hechtias at all. -andy
they seem pretty confusing. first I thought also have the Andy´s "not-argentea" clone but then watching the link pictures just remembered my clone was all whitish during the summer, then greened up and finally got purple!. So it might be like alibaba says argentea behaves according to weather.
this other hechtia is green and it gets this coloration in winter. it may be texensis or something else. {{gwi:446759}}
that is one form of Texensis...another is silver with maroon spines silver form is slow growing and usually only shows the maroon in cool weather. also thicker leaves
Does anyone know what the differences between texensis, glabra, and glomerata are? I seem to recall seeing other Hechtias that also had those reddish blushing spines as well. Are there size or habit differences? And what is the best method or resource for keying out different Hechtias? Smith and Downs? Or digging through old journal articles? -andy
Thanks Chanin :) Your Hechtias look very splendid; my argentea has this very characteristic habit of the leaf ends curling right round, unlike the very straight leaves on yours. I wonder if that is just due to your warmer, more humid climate?
