How to water?

At the beginning of January a florist delivered a bromeliad for my birthday. It is fasciata Primera. The plant is very large and has a big pink bloom. Am I correct that it is watered inside the bracts of the plant and not around the soil? Also there is a second plant of a good size. Should I cut it apart from the mother and put in it's own pot? I do want to keep this plant healthy.

Keep clean water in the cup and only water the soil to keep it moist if temps are below 75F. Leave the pup on ubtil its 50% the size of mom
