What to do with new shoot

twolips

I am sure this has been covered previously, but I can not find it. A year and a half ago my husband had sent me a pink bromeliad to the cancer center where I was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Well the bloom died off quite some time ago, and to my understanding, they only bloom once. I never got rid of the plant, and now I see a new shoot on it. Its about 6", growing off the side of the original plant. What do I do with this new shoot, and will it bloom for me? Do I cut away the original plant?

TIA

Lori
