Remove spent Vriesea spike?

Hello pros!

Well, my Vriesea finally flowered... I'm anxiously anticipating a pup. The flower spike stopped looking good a couple of weeks ago... it has changed from vibrant red to dull brown. It's still very upright, however.

My question is, should one remove a Vriesea flower spike? Or should I just let it go limp and mushy? Thanks!

Yes, remove it. It will help the plant put more energy into pupping.

The only reason to leave it on once it turns brown is if you had pollinated it and were expecting seeds (not something I'd recommend unless you know what you're doing and are hardcore crazy).
