I grow mine in a hanging basket as the leaves hang down. I think you would loose the effect if it was planted in the ground. I water once a week.

A friend of mine grows these as well as the Acanthostachys strobilacea. Both are grown in hanging baskets in his shade house (50% shade cloth in coastal NSW Aus) using a mix of equal parts of bark, charcoal, Perlite and coco-peat.

I have some almost flowering size strobilaceas which I grew from seed as well as a couple of containers of small Acan. Pitcairniodes seedlings from seed given to me by another friend.

I find them very easy and fast to grow from seed.

The flowers on the strobilacea are yellow and higher up on the plant and the seed capsules look like tiny pineapples which makes them quite interesting.

You shouldn't have too much trouble with them if you don't let them stay too wet.
