What is coming out of my bromeliad's flower spike??

My bromeliad (I believe a Vriesea) has had its flower spike for a long time now. The spike has begun fading in color, and now there's several green things popping out of the red flower spike. Here's a picture:

What is this? And what should I do about it?

Those green and yellow things are the flowers, emerging from the red floral bracts. What to do about it? - enjoy them!
