Check this out, what is this giant stem?

I'm from the midwest relocated to Miami. I have tons of random plants in the yard I can't identify but this one is so weird to me. Its looks like any other bromeliad but nine months ago a giant stalk grew 10 feet in the air, bloomed a little and now has little plants all over where the bloms were. Now I think those little ones want to bloom again. Can i pull them off and grow them? It sounds more like a "Century Plant", an agave, than a bromeliad.

Hi alcazar and welcome to our group.

It's pretty hard to positively identify something without a pic. but look at the Photo Index on the FCBS site, go to Tillandsia species, and see if the pic. of Tillandsia Somnians by Derek Butcher looks like it.

Agave sounded more like it to me also though I do consider Till. Secunda for its viviparus pups(silver grey leaf), as well as Till. Somnians (redish leaf) & Till. Denudata viv. form (green leaf). I have never actually grown either of these plants with spikes to 10 ft only about 6-7 ft. Viv. pups can be removed & potted on as per any other type of pup. This identification is not positive only a guess with-out photo, hopefully will help steer you in the right direction. Agave spikes are usually 2-3 inches thick, Till. spikes about as thick as my typeing finger, your middle finger. good growing at least you got it to flower.
