Probably Bill. horrida and if it turns red in good light it will be horrida var. tigrina.

Bill. horrida sounds right.

Like Bob61, I also thought your lovely mystery brom was Bill. horrida - at first glance. The upright inflorescence certainly has a similar look. However, the petal colours and bract shape don't quite fit. Yours has more mauve/purple in the petals, and shorter, more upright primary bracts (up the main stem/rhachis) than either Bi.horrida or the variety tigrina.

I don't know if that difference is within the range of the described species. Maybe yours is a hybrid, with Bi. horrida a likely parent?

For comparison, here is a photo of one of my Bi. horrida var. tigrina in flower. It's not a great photo for showing petal colour, but from memory the petals are mostly a pale sulphur yellow.

You are right, fcbs shows yellow too...

So it stays an unnamed hyrid. At least I know it's a Bill now.
