Tending to a wild bromeliad

Hi all. I know nothing about bromeliads, so please bear with me...

A couple of months ago I was walking my back yard after a windy spell and found a large bromeliad laying on the ground. I figured it was knocked out of a tree, and that was probably where it would like to go back to! So I found an old hanging basket I had laying around and I hung it on the tree close up against the tree trunk. I put a small plastic container in the bottom of the basket to collect water for it (now I'm wondering if I should remove it, now that I'm reading that these are "air plants" with no real root system). I'm excited about my new little basket friend! :) The plant still looks very healthy...in fact, it now has a large stalk growing straight up from the center of it. Is this going to be a flower?
