Its an 'Air Plant' you can't pot it, it will die from lack of air circulation. Many threads on here with good advice on Tillandsia.

The plant root is in moss and crushed sea shells. I'll take out and put it in a hermit crab type shell for better circulation. Ty

Plant is getting to much water on the roots and no air on them. They will rot like they are now.

That plant is a goner. Purchase another one. Get some very thin gauge wire; 26-27-28 gauge and thread it through the plants (if you get a clump of two or more) and let it hang in an airy, bright location. Mist it a coupla times a week. There are Tillandsias that are terrestrial and can handle having their roots covered but these are usually very large plants. Your T. ionantha is an epiphyte-type and prefers to root itself to trees, and rocks occasionally.

Hi Gonz, I found the ionantha balls very easy to grow. They bloom like crazy and require minimal care.

If you use wire to hang your Tillandisas, DO NOT use copper wire. I recently was about to throw out an old pair of holey tennis shoes when I realized that the shoe strings were still in good shape so I saved them. I have since used these thick, soft, cotton strings to hang some of my larger tillansias (brachycaulos, caput medusa, etc.) and they seem to enjoy it (that and being outside after a way too long winter here in Albuquerque). Twine would also do, and maybe even pipe cleaners. I've even bunched together butzii and similar Tillandsias, placed them in egg whisks, and they're hanging in my north-facing porch, too.
