Yes , it seems to be not common in cultivation , but I thought some one here may have it and could offer a comment or 2 .It was brought into Australia by a Sydney grower , and I know a few other growers with it . A mate in a more sub-tropical area will be trying it out in full sun later in the year .

Vriesea tuerckheimii is endemic to the Hispaniola Island in the Caribbean. It likes to grow in cliffs in the Central Mountain Range (under 2,000 meter of elevation). Also this Vriesea grows in the coral rock cliff of the keys, a few meters above the sea water, in the Los Haitises National Park.
So you can imagine it likes full sun. Hope this helps.

Hello, I collected it in 1999 by Maimón, in the Dominican Republic, where it grew on the rocky floor of a closed-canopy forest. Since then I have reproduced various plants by grass pups. They do well in high light with little direct sun and tolerate full sun, but they burn during hot and dry spells. I recommend some shading.

It is very rare for it to be hot and dry here .. I have had both my large plants of this sp. in full sun for the last 2 years , and they look much better for it .

Great info, as I too have recently purchased this plant. Does anyone have a photo of the flower? How long will it take to flower?
