That damage looks like possible sunburn or heatburn while in transit. The fenestralis-type vrieseas might not survive with that damage right in the middle of the plant. Any water in the vase may have boiled, and could now rot from the centre - but they still might throw pups in order to keep itself going.

The damage on the leaves of your newer ones will probably go like your variegated vriesea - brown and dried. I have made the mistake of leaving broms in a very hot car, post purchase, with similar results. I've also had similar damage from the sun hitting parts of them while driving. The fact that they have been softly-grown in a greenhouse, prior to transit, makes them more susceptible to damage with a drastic change to their environment.

Good luck with them. They are still a good buy, if you got them quite cheaply. They should grow out O.K., and then you'll have some lovely plants. Maybe some selective trimming of leaves will improve their looks - esp. with the hieroglyphica and variegated one.

could be copper damage from treated lumber

I think you are right, it must be the heat. I know they use fridge trucks for the transport, but maybe somebody wanted to save on the transport using a regular truck, or the plants took the heat during the upload or download.

The innermost leaves are still intact, so I hope, especialy for the fenestralis type that is new for me but is also the most damaged one. There were also two saundersii that are in perfect conditions
