From what I can see of the foliage, it looks like a Guzmania, but does it have any roots? That is indeed a pup, but it's much too young to remove yet. I can't see the base of the plant, from this angle it almost looks as if it may have been cut off with no root system, which would explain the rapid browning. If that is the case, there probably is no way to revive it or save the pup. If it does have a root system, or at least an undamaged base, pot it up and keep water in the cup until the pup is about half the size of the mother plant, then you can remove it. You can cut off the spent flower though, and any browned foliage.

The first thing I noticed with your plant is as you said, it is browning, your lower leaves appear to be going brown & mushy, this indicates too wet & insufficient air movement around your plant. Carefully remove those lower leaves by splitting them down the middle length wise & pull to each side & away. If you don't do this it will cause your plant to rot & most definately lose that pup, be carefull around that pup it will break off easily, use a pair of scissors if nescssary. Mainly, only keep water in the centre of the plant & just moist in the pot, only water it every few days or so & maybe put it out in the garden in a shady position will help.
