do bromeliads benefit from pruning?

i had a pineapple top i planted with the original leaves in december. now it has many new leaves. The old leaves on the top have not grown at all but still remain dark green. Are the original leaves doing anything beneficial or would it be better off if i remove them?

If the leaves are not dried up or rotting they are synthesizing sunlight and providing nourishment for the plant, so don't cut them off.
