To me it looks very much like an Aech bracteata or a hybrid with it in the mix. Those spines look just like bracreata's. But bracteata has a flower very unlike fasciata - long and spindly and not yellow either. Maybe you wait until it flowers and show us another picture.

Funny that this post reminded me that I have a bracteata somewhere, in the neighbor's yard. Japie, if you say the flowers aren't yellow then what's this? First time flowering so I'm no expert. From Michael's years ago.

yes from description flower is not like that of bracteata at all, wouldnt class the bracteata flower as 'very similar to fasciata's only yellow', but plant does look very like it, maybe just have to wait for flower to show itself

Hi Guys

This plant/foliage is reminding me of a plant I recently put in the garden tagged as Aechmea mertensii, which does have a yellow flower head, I haven't flowered it yet so I am only presuming the tag is correct on my plant & the foliage does look more like my Ae. bracteata ?? I do hope I've got the real thing though.
