It was only the bloom that broke off, unplantsavy. It's too bad, but it won't hurt the plant or the pup's chances for survival. If anything, it will allow the mother plant to put more energy into pup production now that it doesn't have to support a flower. It will eventually die, but it's not an immediate thing. Hopefully you will get several pups from the mother before that happens.

I suggest you put the flower in a vase and enjoy it for as long as it lasts. There's not much else you can do about that at this point.

I would also suggest, however, that you use a commercial potting mix rather than garden soil for the mother, preferably something that drains well. Most bromeliads are epiphytic (naturally growing attached to the surface of trees, rocks, etc.) rather than terrestrial (in the ground), and your Guzmania is no exception. They generally adapt well to pot culture, but not to dense, heavy soil.

Thank you so much! The yard soil was just to fill in the space between the pretty pot and the plastic pot I planted the flower in. I used some good compost/MG/Bark/cactus soil a long with rocks at the bottom of the small pot for drainage for the mother plant and pup.

I'm sad to see the beautiful gal go, but some times some must die for other to survive. (they some from a jungle like atmosphere, lets play it up a little)
