Large grower with soft leaves, seems to love the hot dry sun.

Have you checked the FCBS.org site? They have many great photos of all bromeliads.

If the older leaves, which I can't see, are curled at the tips then you have T. duratii

The way the leaves are opening makes me think T. streptocarpa. The handful of duratiis I've seen 'drop' their leaves one at a time while the streptocarpas make more of an open rosette

Forgot to mention T straminea which, the more I look the likelier it seems.
