Leaf patterns....... a fun quiz.

LisaCLV

Okay kids, how much attention do you pay to the markings on bromeliad foliage (as opposed to the form or the inflorescence)? I know some of you are whizzes at this, so here's a fun little quiz to test your powers of observation. Most of them should be pretty easy, but there might be a couple that are tougher than they look. No obscure cvs. here. Many are species, but there are some hybrids too (and yes, one is mine, but only one).

I took these photos a few years ago, sorry if some are a tad blurry, but don't wait for a larger picture, there won't be any!

    Hi guys,

As a beginner I'll try some of the easy ones and leave the harder ones to the experts:
    #5 Vr. 'Sunset'
    #7 Vr. platynema variegata
    #8 Neo. 'Amazing Grace'
    #13 Bill. 'Domingos Martins'?
    #17 Vr. ospinae v. gruberi
    #19 Vr. fenestralis?

    Good quiz LisaÂI agree with Paul on # 7, 8, 13, & 17.

#1; Looks something like an albomarginated Aech orlandiana? But different to Ensign.
#2; First thought was Neo smithii, but the pattern seems to have a texture, so would rule out the maculation of smithii
    #3; Bill Hallelujah
    #4 5 6 9 & 10 ?
    #11; Aech Chantinii or Zebrina?
    #12; Vr splendens
    #14; Vr Vista
    #15; Neo rubrovittata
    #16, 18?
    #19; Werauhia kupperiana
#20; Zonated neoÂIÂll take a guess & say Blueberry Tiger.

ThatÂs about all I can handle for tonightÂall I can see now is spots, dots, lines & bandsÂ

  • devo_2006

OK...I've now had a change of heart, & don't know why I fixated on #1 being orlandiana...you could have made the first one a little easier Lisa! I'm now convincing myself that with the texture in the pattern it's got to be a neo concentrica hybrid of some sort.

If I can't sleep & keep seeing spots & dots all night I'm blaming you & your **** fun quiz Lisa!

See? I knew you guys were good! You've all got some of them but nobody's got them all, and at least one has got the right name in the wrong place! I'll wait for a few more people to have a chance, and give the answers tonight. In the meantime I'll tell you which one is mine: #3. That should make it easier, as nobody's got that one yet.

    #19 - Wer. kupperiana

Me again after a sleepless night!

    #16 - Ques marmorata

And for #11 I am very tempted to say it is Vr splendens because of that stepped colour band, but #12 looks exactly like the pattern I get during Winter months and I do not think you will post 2 different pictures of the same one unless you want to show the variablilty?

Well, between all of you, you seem to have gotten most of them. All but #10, that is. That one seems to have stumped everyone!

    Maybe this will help:

    {{gwi:484497}}

Might as well give the answers now:

    #1) Neo. concentrica 'Bill Morris'
    #2) Ae. 'Rakete'
    #3) Bill. 'New Years Eve'
    #4) Neo. 'Crayola'
    #5) Vr. 'Sunset'
    #6) Neo. 'Pink Sensation'
    #7) Vr. platynema v. variegata
    #8) Neo. 'Amazing Grace'
    #9) Ae. chantinii 'Samurai'
    #10) Neo. princeps
#11) big scary cow........ oh wait, I mean Ae. zebrina

    #17) Vr. ospinae v. gruberi
#18) Ed. lindenii albomarginated (thanks Ross for the 'Alvim Seidel' name, didn't know that)
    #19) Werauhia kupperiana
    #20) Neo. carcharodon 'Tiger'

Sorry, no cigars, but Japie and Kerry tied at 15 points each, so maybe they can split one. Yong was right behind with 14 (and probably would have gotten 15 if he'd taken a guess on #20) so you'd better let him have a puff too!

    Thanks for playing!

Very cool LisaÂthis will go down in GW history as a classic and yes, a fun quiz. BTW, I had a great sleep last night, & actually thought of a few leaf pattern combinations I want to try out in hybridsÂmay be I should study leaf patterns each night before I go to bed! ThereÂs no way I would have got up to 15/20, but IÂm glad #1 turned out to be a neo concentrica hybridÂthat one really did bug me! It was those 2 little leaf spines in the top left cornerÂthen a gapÂI knew IÂd seen that trait before, combined with the texture of the pattern.

Your picÂs just go to show what a fantastic range of leaf patterns this diverse family of plants has.

OK, now whatÂs the next quiz? The kids are ready for moreÂ

    Hello All,

Thank Lisa for bringing a wonderful quiz to us. There is a lot of marvelous leaf patterns in Broms world. We have to learn to distinguish this such plants. It's a good quiz.

I'm second with all. We want more ........... ;-)

    Hi everyone,

Lisa, I'm prety hopeless at this, but I do enjoy looking through your "stain glass window" look alikes.

The knowledge and skill of the GW members to be able to identify plants from a little bit of leaf is truly amazing.

Keep up the good work, all the best, Nev.

Ok Lisa, my one request? Do some apprentice-level quizzes. 20 was really overwhelming...if I'm going to be wrong, its easier on the ego to only be wrong on 10 at a time rather than 20 at a time! Ha ha.

    Looking forward to more!
