They have gotten into the cherry hedge and seem to be doing well, until it comes time to trim the hedge.

I concur. They flower then die but their seeds are prolific.

Hey Nick, most of mine don't. They grow into short-stemmed bushes unless I chop them up and call the bits "pups". Still the same plant though, just in bits. Thinking about it now, the original apex dying off really seems no different to the way a lot of bushes and trees self-prune as they branch out and grow.

Which leads me to wonder, some of the brom plants we grow could well be hundreds of years old since they germinated from a seed, with bits of them scattered all over the planet.

Hey Andy, if you are reading this, I wonder how old some of those Hechtia's would have been on that cliff face you pictured a while back. With isolated remnants of old stems all over the place, some of those Hechtias might represent bits of individual plants that have trundled all over that cliff face for centuries.
