As Kyle and I were discussing on the "other forum" these types of Tillandsias (with the heavy layer of scales) can be the most problematic plants when watering is concerned. Too little? Too much? How often? When one of these, especially tectorum, has rotted it can be a long time before the realization sets in. The rotted appearence can be the same as that of a living plant. The reason for the heavy layer of trichomes (the 'scales') is to protect the plant's epidermal layer from the damaging UV rays of the sun and to trap any microscopic particles of nutrients in the air. These species can live at intense elevations where rainfall is non-existant and the sunlight is fierce. Watering them can be a fine art.
