Ya know Lisa, all these "quiz" photos? They'd of made a great backdrop at Pink Floyd concerts.

Gonzer, you're right, I think I saw Ae. pectinata in this video.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pink Floyd Video

Stunning pictures, Lisa, I second Gonzer's statement! I was waiting to see some answers so I can do some copying, but nobody wants to oblidge. So let me take the plunge.

    #1 - Aech Alaya
    #2 - Neo spectabilis variegata
    #3 - Vr philippo-coburgii small form
#4 - Nid rutilans a-m (is there such a thing?)
    #5 - Neo carch Rubra/gigas
    #6 -
    #7 - Can triangulare
    #8 - Vr vagans
    #9 -
    #10- Neo smithii

K, swing (and probably miss) at another one. Good thing I didn't do this poorly in school...

    #1 Ae. caudata variegata
    #2 Neo
    #3 Vr.
    #4 Neo Dorothy
    #5 Vr.
#6 Nid fulgans (but the teeth look wrong...)
    #7 Canistrum ?
    #8 Vr. something or other
    #9 Neo
    #10 Neo

They all look so familiar, but the connections just aren't there. And it seems like one should be a Bill, but which one?

Sheesh - they're getting even harder! What, no clues even?

#1 - Ae. caudata var. variegata (not copying Andy, but thought the same)
#2 - umm..yep, agree with Japie - Neo. spectabilis variegated
    #3 - Vr. bituminosa
    #4 - Ae. mexicana - albomarginated
    #5 - WTF? umm...Edmundoa lindenii var. rosea
#6 - Wittrockia gigantea (wild guess)
#7 - Canistrum triangulare (thanks Japie!)
#8 - Vr. philippo-coburgii or vagans (hedging my bets)
#9 - Ae. 'Xavante' (cv. of nudicaulis)
    #10 - Neo. 'Blueberry Muffin'

    Cross-eyed Kerry :)

Oh, oh, I was out watering and change my answer
    #6 to Ae. pectinata?

Clues???? That's only for after everybody has guessed wrong, Kerry. I sense you guys are getting tired of this, but let's have a few more contestants first. Where is Yong? I don't want him to miss the boat again!

In the meantime, I'll give you your scores so far, using the nifty KBT 2-point-per-question system (1 for genus + 1 for species). Out of a possible 20 points, Japie is in the lead with 13, Kerry is gaining on him with 12, while Andy had 8 before watering but only 6 post-irrigation. That should give you plenty of clues. ;-)

O.K. I'll quickly jump in here and change my answer for #6 to Nidularium fulgens - and don't you copy Japie!

Meanwhile, I'll go back and try my poor math skills on the rest!
......now if Japie answered 8 and got a score of 13, and I answered 10 and got 12, and if Andy answered 10 genera but only 3 species and got 8 but with thirst quenched lost 2 - ooh is 1 point for a species, without mention of cultivar maybe a clue? - and ummm... if, no what about, ummm.....ooh, quick!, must post this before Japie gets in. Yes, yes, I know....get a life Kerry...but it sure beats mowing.

Glad you caught the boat this time Yong - maybe I'm not the best to copy from though!

Please accept my revisions, Ms Vinzant.

#1 - Ae. caudata var. variegata
    #2 - Neo. spectabilis variegated
    #3 - Vr. bituminosa
    #4 - Nid. rutilans albomarg.

Great picÂs Lisa, they really do reveal a touch of the creators detailed designÂand I suspect theyÂre all species ;-)

I agree with Kerry, these are getting harder, I had to wait for the cluesÂbut they didnÂt help muchÂ

    So here goesÂ

    #1 Aech.caudata var. variegata
    #2 Neo. spectabilis variegated
    #3 Vr ?
    #4 Ae. Coelestis var. albomarginata
    #5 Quesnelia edmundoi var. rubrobracteata???
    #6 No idea???
#7 Canistrum triangulare (IÂll go with the popular vote, thanks Japie)
#8 Vr. vagans was my first thought, but IÂll go with Vr. erythrodactylon
#9 Thinking Vr. Vr. flammeaÂbut it doesnÂt have those kinks in the leaf?
Ah ha, yes Ae. recurvata var.benrathii fits (Thanks to Yong who posted while I was typing!)
    #10 Neo smithii

Ok, Kerry, I won't change #6, but but 2 others:

    #1 Aech caudata variegata
#2 Aech mexicana a-m (should have gotten this one in the first place!)

These may have seemed harder, but you guys are actually doing pretty well. And without any clues! The only one nobody's mentioned yet is the second half of #3.

Yes, Kerry, one point for genus and one for species, I hadn't figured cv. names into the equation. Perhaps I should have had a 3 point system, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with any of these. Keeping score has gotten a bit harder now with all of the changes and multiple answers, but I'll do my best.

Japie, are you sure it's #2 you want to change? So far that's about the only one that everybody seems to agree on! I have a feeling your answer was meant for #4, as a couple of the others had. Assuming that to be the case, your current score is 14, otherwise it drops to 10. It's not always wise to go with the majority. ;-)

Kerry has moved into the lead with 16.... or 15, depending on how I score #8.

Glad you caught the boat, Yong, you have 13 points.

Andrew, you changed a couple of your answers mid-post. If I count everything mentioned you get 12 points, but if I go with your final answers, it's 11. BTW, your suspicions are correct. ;-)

So, I'll let you math/logic wizards figure it all out while I sleep, and I'll give the full list in the morning.
In the meantime, for #3..... think small.

    Hello Lisa,

I got your boat. Let me try again

    #1 Ae. Alaya
    #2 Neo. spectabilis variegated
    #3 Vr rubyae
#4 Nid. rutilans albomarg (Thank Kerry)
    #5 N.carcharodon rubra
    #6 Nid. fulgens (Thank Kerry)
    #7 Canistrum triangulare (thanks Japie!)
    #8 Vr.vagans
    #9 Ae.recurvata v.benrathii
    #10 Neo. 'Blueberry Muffin'

    Cheers
    Yong

That was the idea - not #2 but #4!

But seeing I stuffed it up, let me leave it the way it was, except for still changing #1 and add #6 to be Nid fulgens (I'm sure Kerry will concent as she now used 2 of mine originals!) So here's my final:

    #1 - Aech caudata variegata
    #2 - Neo spectabilis variegata
    #3 - Vr philippo-coburgii small form
    #4 - Nid rutilans a-m
    #5 - Neo carch Rubra/gigas
    #6 - Nid fulgens
    #7 - Can triangulare
    #8 - Vr vagans
    #9 -
    #10- Neo smithii

All of that changing has lost you as many points as you gained, Japie! Maybe it's time to quit. You're still at 14, but Yong has moved into the lead with 17 points. Congratulations, Yong!

    Here are the answers:

    #1) Ae. (calyculata) 'Alaya'
    #2) Neo. spectabilis variegated
    #3) Vr. rubyae
    #4) Ae. mexicana albomarginated
#5) Neo. gigas (AKA carcharodon Rubra)
    #6) Nid. fulgens
    #7) Can. triangulare
    #8) Vr. vagans
    #9) Ae. recurvata v. benrathii
    #10) Neo. smithii

What is intersting to me is that nobody confused this:
    {{gwi:496301}}

...with this one from the first quiz:
    {{gwi:484494}}

I thought sure there would be some cross-guessing on those two!

  • kerry_t_australia

Ha ha - that was very funny how we kept changing our answers, but the wrong ones back and forth. And thanks Japie for some great copy material!

Thanks for the mind-bender, Lisa. I think we just guessed you wouldn't use the same plant twice, re the two look-alikes.

Well done, and congratulations Yong! - enjoy your cyber cigar.

    K :)

  • avane_gw

I agree Kerry - and I said to myself when I entered my answers first time, I'm NOT going to change any of them, no matter who says what! But then I went outside and had a good look at my Ae Alaya when everybody else suggested it is caudata variegata. And mine looked so flimsy so I thought I'll just change that one . . . . .

And Lisa, I thought about why you would use the same plant twice, so I had a look at the original and saw 2 distinct differences: one more, one less glossy but the main difference, the markings on mexicana has a more vertical inclination to them, where as Alvim's tend to have a more horizontal feel to them.

And it is these small little differences that gets me so addicted to these plants. So, with these postings, you are forcing us to really look and not just glancing and seeing a nice plant 'that kind of looks just like that nice one over there!'

So, what about a whole series of these 'Eye-openers'? I am sure there are plenty others that would like to see more of these close-up shots of you!

    Japie
