What you have there looks to me like a Dracena and not a bromeliad at all. I sugest you google "dracena" or look in the house plant section of Garden Web Forums for more info.

It can't be a Dracena, 'cause the stem doesn't look all thick and woody and brown like that.

It's green and almost bamboo-like.

Your plant is a Dracena. It is definately NOT a bromeliad.

What you have is almost certainly Dracaena sanderiana or something very close to it, also known as "Lucky Bamboo". Give that a google.

The woody, barky appearance is what you get on old stems of a lot of Dracaenas. You will often see fresh new growth on short bits of very old stem, because Dracaenas are often propagated by chopping the old stems up into short lengths and striking them as cutttings.

D. sanderiana does have green, bamboo-like stems, but the one in the picture above is D. deremensis 'Janet Craig'.
