Care advice and ID for potted Bromeliad

I've inherited my MIL's Bromeliad, and I'd really love to keep it alive and healthy in her memory. She kept it inside, but when I first began care of it, it was looking a little sad.

At first, I kept it inside where it was, and watered it about twice a week. It really picked up growth, and began looking healthier. A few months ago, I moved it outside onto our covered apartment balcony....admittedly, probably a bad idea (USDA Zone 8/Sunset zone 11), but I am somewhat new to gardening and assumed it needed more light than our often dimly lit apartment can provide.

I haven't noticed anything bad occurring now that it is outside, but I took it inside yesterday, since Google .

What species might this be? Should I keep it inside? Does it need to be repotted?

Is the yellow patch from too much watering, lack of nutrients, or too much sun? Is it on the plant's newest growth or is it a resolved old problem?

The leaves look unhealthy in spots, should I clip them off directly or how close to the stem?

Help appreciated;

Many thanks-
