 o
Billbergia care

Okay... I have a total of 8 different bromeliads of varying types. All are doing splendid, growing happily, except for my 2 Billbergia. I have checked, no fungus, no slugs, nothing obvious, they just aren't growing. They are in a greenhouse, never dry out for long periods, and I don't think they are too wet, considering we have almost no humidity here (hence the greenhouse) Could it be they need more light? I was afraid to give them more than early morning sun here, cuz most tropicals, especially the serious understoreys can't take much Sacramento sun. Any suggestions?

Try increasing the light a bit. I have had them do fine in exposures where the got quite a bit of light. Just make any increase gradual.

A lot of Billbergias can be moved slowly up to full sun. Many of the ones that have the showy colors and speckles and spots will be plain green if not given enough sun (plants like Fantasia, Hallelujah, Muriel Waterman etc).

I always have a problem with deciding what full sun means in Florida as compared with here in Sacramento. I even have to give my plumeria some shade when it gets over 105º here.
They will get burnt too.

Full sun here means:
out in the sun
no shade
8-12 hours a day
sun beating, blistering down
temps to 95+F
humidity 50-85+%

I assume it means the same in California and in the other states.

Well, subtract 70º humidity, which apparently keeps plants from getting burnt and you have California sunshine. Most tropicals here get fried in our full sun. I have to put shade cloth on my greenhouse even. my hedychiums can only take a couple hours of full sun...or they get burnt. You have never been out west, have you? Also, remember, it doesn't rain here for around 8 months of the year.

Yes, Heathen, I have been "out West". I lived in Los Angeles for 7 years.

Well, there ya go! :o) LA pollution acts like a cloud cover...:oD My Ylang Ylang got burnt when the shade cover blew off my green house...:o( I really think humidity cuts down on the suns radiation, because really, there are few tropicals that I can grow that can take more than 4-5 hours sun... some of the hardier bananas can take it, but they look kinda ratty. My ice cream banana got fried when it topped the level of my house.

I never had any difficulty with tropical plants in Los Angeles being in full sun.

You should look into Sacramento's Bromeliad Society-It's one of the older ones in your area-they hold plant sales and exhibits. The solution is right in front of you.
