Need ID and advice (thanks all!)

Hi, Well, i got lucky today and rescued a beautiful bromeliad from the local plant service. This one was out of it's pot, but no matter, it's potted up now.

The best I can find online is maybe it's an aechmea ramosa x fulgens? Is this possible? Most of the inflorescence is a pale coral, and the buds (?) are whitish, with some brown tabs which I am guessing are flowers now shriveled up. Amazing, actually, that they tossed it before it actually bloomed, though the center apparently has done some dying off. Nice strong pup.

Anyway, is my ID even close, and if so, can it be grown outdoors if i protect it from frost? I didn't find anything helpful in a quick online search here, and you all are the experts. My house is pretty stuffed with plants, and this one is pretty large. Thanks, Janine

janartmuse - Sorry I can't help with the ID except to say I think it's an Aechmea. It's still a pretty spectacular looking plant though, and as you say, "Amazing, actually, that they tossed it before it actually bloomed".

That dead area in the centre could be rotted, and if so that's probably why they tossed it. However, although I don't know much about Aechmeas, I have found that some can be quite cold sensitive here where I live in Australia.

I've had a few with cold damage which led to rot eventually, but I just cut off the dead and rotted bits and put the remaining plants in a sheltered area of the garden and they eventually produced a pup or two.

I don't know what your growing conditions are like but I would treat it as cold sensitive until you know more. Hopefully you can get a pup from it and grow it on successfully.

There is a nice big pup and a small one, chopped when they cut off the lower leaves. Maybe when it's big enough I will detach that one and bring it indoors as a safe precaution. Winter temps in 40s and 50 (fahrenheit) and nighttime can drop into low thirties. Thanks, J
