Which is better for the plant?
| | |
Posted by haxuan Vietnam (My Page) on Sat, Oct 24, 09 at 1:06
I have several tillandsias that are producing offsets. Should I remove the offsets and plant them alone or should I leave them with mom to clump?
I really want to know what is the better way for the plant.
Many thanks for your advice.

| Keep in mind, in nature no one is around to pull the offsets off. I find that it all comes down to personal preference, a single plant is definitely a much cleaner look, but a large clump can be very impressive. As far as better for the plant or not, I really don't know, I'm sure it would come down to the particular species. kyle |

| You're right, in nature there's no one around to separate the pups, i.e. it's more "natural" for them to stay together. OK that way, though. Thanks, Kyle. |

Xuan, my practice is to remove pups only when: 1) It is a desirable and uncommon plant 2) The pups interfere with air flow 3) The weight of the plant is unbalanced on the mount 4) The buildup of dead leaves from pups retain too much moisture |

| Thank you very much, Gonzer. I will follow your advice. At the moment, I don't have many plants yet and I've thought of removing the pups to... multiply. I thought that once the pups are removed, perhaps, the moms might still want to produce more. Yes? No? Xuan |

| Yes, in most cases the mother plant keeps producing. Even when the plant looks like it should be thrown away there is always a chance for one more pup. |

| You're very kind, Gonzer. Thanks very much. Xuan |

| Those are some good rules to go by gonzer, I think I will be adopting them my self. |
