Newbie With A Question

I am certain this is a basic question but I am new to Bromeliads. I have three broms that have developed a number of pups, Mexican Alba, Little Harv, and a Neo Cruenta. I believe that the pups are big enough to remove. My question is once the pups are removed does the mother plant die or will it contine to live but just not flower?

Also, I live near Tampa Florida and last February we got down into the low 20's and it stayed that way for several hours. As a results I lost a lot of plants. When I replanted my broms I left them in their plastic field pots. I thought that the next time it freezes I would simply dig the pot and the brom up and move them into the garage until the freeze was over. Is this a good or bad idea?

Thank you.
