Let grow...Orthophytum shall we?

Among xeric broms, I've found that most of members in genus Orthophytum

are the fastest grower.

I just potted up this O. saxicola viridis last five months,

with only two single plant in this pot, and now...

{{gwi:504290}}

Orthophytum saxicola variegated form...a weed!

{{gwi:504291}}

That variegated Orthophytum maracasense and his fellow, Ortho.'Starlight'

(the deep red leaf) also grow so fast.

{{gwi:474814}}

Orthophytum alvimii with fuzyy leaves.

{{gwi:451395}}

Silver plants on the left, Orthophytum lemei and green plants on the right,

Ortho. rubrum.

{{gwi:504292}}

No need to root again, it's done.

{{gwi:504293}}

The blooming Orthophytum 'Iron Ore' at the bottom, a really fast too!.

{{gwi:462129}}

But these are some neat things, quite slow growing.

The silver one near the left is Ortho. sp silver leaf of Burle Marx garden,

I got from Michael which appears to be the same palnt of Tropiflora,

Ortho. disjunctum MG.

Ortho. navioides is near the bottom left corner,

behind a part of typical form of Ortho. vagans.

Ortho. burle-marxii var. sebrae is in front of the silver one,

and then small pup of Ortho. burle-marxii (with yellow tag)

Right from top, Ortho. gurkenii, Ortho. saxicola var. saxicola, Ortho. 'Copper Penny'

{{gwi:504294}}

This is my Orthophytum corner with a few xNeophytum and Hechtia.

{{gwi:504295}}

Today, there are about 45 different kinds of Orthophytum in my collection.

Some new stuffs are still in ICU corner...

will show when they are established well.

    I bow to the master!! What a wonderful collection. Showoff, you just really like to make my mouth water Stephania.

    Oddly enough I just got in my first catalog from Michael's and I have already marked in the Orth.'s the one's I want.
    Brittle Star, Burle-marxii, Gurkenii, Iron ore, Navioides, Stardust and Vagans (albo marginated).

    Sounds like you have the same growing conditions as I do or at least similar enough that I figure if you can grow them I probably can also.

    Once again thanks for sharing all your beauties with us.

    Every time I open a post from Stephania, my jaw drops. Niiiice!

    Do tell us about the planting medium you use with these plants, Stephania. Are the white pebbles througout, or just on the surface?

    They look lovely, as usual, Stephania! I think all of my xeric stuff has to go back to the ICU, or at least inside the shadehouse where they'll get better care.

    We have had heavy rain everyday since last week, as a tropicalstrom named
    'Chang San' which hit Philippines Veitnam, Laos last week, past our country Thailand. Fortunately, it clam down to be a depression.

    But you know, all my xeric broms, particularly Orthophytum, seem to be very happy. They do love a lot of water!

    My dear HDD, in a way of our Buddhism, 'Spiny' can teach us to be concentrated when we do anythings, I mean like we do a meditation...Ouuuch...dam Hechtia !!!

    Oh Patris, I sure you will love those choices, O.'Brittle Star' is something amazing also 'Star Dust', I would recommend a rare one in Michael list if he has, O. supthutii, as my friend in German told me that this recently discovered species would be a relative of Burle-marxii group.

    On left : O. 'Star Dust', Top : O. fosterianum, Right : a cutest O. 'Brittle Star'
    and Bottom : O. supthutii

    Ortho. benzingii, one of the most curious terrestrial brom, as its stick-like stem.
    This was my plant from Michael two month ago, it is going to bloom now.
    There is a nice pic in FCBS, Pls see the link at the bottom.

    Hey Catkim, glad to meet you here!
    Actually, that pebble is top dressing pumice.

    My growing medium for most of my xeric broms compised of :
    Two parts Perlite, Two parts small size 0.3-0.5 cm Pumice,
    One part loamy soil with leaf mould.

    Lisa, don't abase yourself...LOL
