Snaggletooth would be my favorite. Talk about dangerous!!

RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Congratulations Stephania,on an excellent selection with some great additions to your collection.I have many 'plant names'questions for you on your posted photos, but it can wait for another day.
I too ordered some unusual Hechtias,Dyckias, and a four-head Cr.warasii, and will have some pics when they arrive.
After all the unpacking, potting, and photo taking, you should sleep well, but if you're like me,you'll likely do it over and over again in your dreams. Exciting day for you!
Bob

RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Thanks folk, as Bob said I had a nice dream last night...LOL

Four-head Crypt. warasii !!! Woww
Bob...that would be a perfect of your "Holy Grail".
In this shipment, Dr. Larry also gave me a close relative of Crypt. warasii,
yes a rare Crypt. leopold-horstii, a xeric species that has smilar leaf's texture
with narrow stiff silver leaves

Here, the plant at the bottom, among a couple of Dyck. 'Snaggletooth'

I have to say this slow-growing Brom, Cryptanthus warasii , it seems to love direct sunlight, here my first one, received from Michael months ago.

A friend of mine told me that Guy Wrinkle (RareExotics.com) sells C. warasii too, although I don't see it on his site. Maybe you have to ask. I've never bought from him, but the word is that he's pricey and the plants he sends are small. Still, he has some unusual things.

Nice haul, Stephania! I anxiously await seeing your Orth. albopictum. If it gives you lots of pups, ask one if it would like to live in Hawaii! ;-)

RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Hi Lisa,/Stephania....Yes,Guy Wrinkle is a tad pricy, but his S/H costs are near actual postage, and is less than 'minimums' of others. So that helps. If you look at that list you just posted, you will see that Hechtia #2,and Dyckia #3 are already sold. That could be me,as I put the order in on line about 45 minutes after he posted the list. Also got a Hechtia tehuacan.I've ordered twice before from him,and the plants were of decent size.He does have plants that you seldom see offered anywhere else, and that may be reflected in the prices.I have a hunch he does his own collecting in Mexico,or has a contact there.Anyway, its another source for brom addicts.
Bob

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Stephania, your C.warasii looks like it grew the young leaves about a half inch, and developed larger spines. It's getting there.
So heres the multi C. warasii, not as large as I expected, and just three heads are visable in this view, the 4th being hid by the leaves, but you can see a couple of the leaves sticking out to the right in the 1st pic.The original plant had recently bloomed.
Bob

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Hey Bob...that must be a diamond crown for your collection !

Yes, I noticed that Michael's plant has more stiff leaves with a bigger teeth.
I don't know if there is only one clone in trade or a lot of seed plants have been offered.

Thanks Lisa ! that Guy's is very interesting...
but I think I'm too late, as someone here always bid 24 hours online ...LOL

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Yes, Bob, how is it that you got to Guy Wrinkle's plants less than an hour after he posted them? Does a flashing red light by your computer go on every time somebody offers something new?

Speaking of bidding online, I see there's a warasii on eBay right now. 6 days left, only 50 bucks! ;-)

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Lisa, nothing as sophisticated as a flashing light on the computer....just a big old fashioned 1850db. siren on the roof! [in case I doze off]. I'm not sure those Guy W. plants are mine yet, there may have been someone else in ahead of me.We'll see.
That e-bay C.warasii looks pretty good, nice and mature.Too bad I already spent this months food money on broms.
Hey Stephania, they're still some nice broms on Guy's site that somebody did'nt grab yet, whoever that somebody was.;-)
And Lisa, there is yet another red spined Hechtia shown on FCBS,H.glabra. Looks very cool.Never seen that offered anywhere.I had a H.texensis outdoors all summer,in the sun,and the spines turned redish, but not real blazing red. When it got less sun as Summer waned, they faded back.If you hear of a source for glabra, thats one I'd like to have.

RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

I think Guy gets plants the same prices we do, and adds his take. African plants can be had cheaper from other nurseries.

I bought a red form of Alcantarea from him--$35 I think, and it was barely 2 inches--a string pup. I'd ask around before bidding on his plants right away.

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

philofan,There is some nice red Vriesea imperialis available at the Rainforest Flora site, priced by the size of the plant.Pics look very good.Maybe a chance to get your moneys worth, instead of what you received from Guy.
Bob

Cryptanthus warasii

Lisa that Ebay price seems high compared to other sellers that have it listed. Have I missed something related to the price of others?

 o
nevermind

The Dr answered about this Cryptanthus warasii. Hard to grow and slow reproducer

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

bob,

Yes, Paul carries some, but I picked up a real nice one from Michael's a couple weeks ago. It holds it's discolor well even with fertilization. Michael's is the place to shop.

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

philofan,Yep.can't go wrong at Michael's. Is that photo you posted from Michael's or Paul's ?? [no 2" pups there!]
Bob

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

That photo is at Micheals. philo is still being stingy with the pics (snicker)Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Stingy no. Busy yes. I still have to pot our big order for the weekend sale, so nothing that soon. But the plants do look great.

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Just a warning to all my fellow Gwebber's. I CANNOT recommend Guy Wrinkle. I too bought a red form of Alcantarea from him, it was pathetic. It promptly died. He would not even answer my (polite)emails. Avoid like the plague. These photos were taken the day I got them in the mail.

Wow,that is sad ! I must have been VERY fortunate to have received decent plants the last time I ordered. BUT,I have three that should arrive tomorrow,2 Hechtia's,and 1 Dyckia. Now I'm a bit concerned.
What you received for your money is like stealing, and perhaps you should document your transaction to the State Attorney General. Perhaps then you could receive a refund.
Bob

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Sorry to see you got stiffed too, junglegal. (My pup is still alive, but doesn't seem to grow very fast.)

When I mentioned him to some collectors who've been around a while, they said never to buy from Guy.

He shows the big grown plants in his descriptions, but you have no idea what you will be getting for the high price.

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Thats one reason credit cards are a life saver for sellers like this "Guy" no pun intended

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Nice plants you got there Stephania. I really like the D. reitzii v. rubra. I hope to get one when i get my snaggletooth. I have a winters edge that should be here friday or saturday. I will post a pic of it so we can compare them and look for differences.

 o
RE: 'Big Combo Set' arrival !

Foxwichya, you have made a good decision,
though I knew that Dyckia reitzii v. rubra price is arms & legs !
I noticed from the great result of hybrids which came from this Dyckia as a parentage,
it's always perfect : red or margenta colour with a nice compact rosette form.

This is an unnamed hybrid from D. reitzii v.rubra that my friend got from Bill Baker.

Again, another view of that bigeneric hybrid
(Deutero. brevispicata X Dyck. reitzii rubra)
The plant is really stunning, so does the price !!
