Seriously, I am very moved by this gesture. I have to say, in all honesty, that occasionally someone will want to attach my name to some so-so unnamed hybrid they've gotten from me, and I generally try to discourage them as tactfully as I can because if I thought it deserved a name I would have given it one myself, and I don't want to be remembered for my culls. In addition, it is considered poor form to name one of your own hybrids after yourself, so that is something I will never do.

These Crypts, on the other hand, are absolutely gorgeous cultivars that anyone would be proud of, and I'm sure Dennis Cathcart will be equally pleased with his namesake! I am honored to be in such good company, but the thing that means the most to me is that now Ken and Lisa can still be together long after we're both gone. :-)

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm gonna cry again.....

Btw, forgive my ignorance, Lisa, but do you actually live on the 'Big Island'? I was sort of surprised by the quake but then again not ... after all that is still an active volcanoe chain. Didn't have any quakes worth mentioning during my time on Oahu. [Not that I'm complaining....]

About the earthquake, as you mentioned. I also asked my German friend, Dr Joachim Saul, a bromeliad collector and also a seismologist, he told me that...

"... This was a big and unusual quake indeed. But no big damage.
Big quakes can happen in Hawaii but this big is rare. ....
I think it was due to vulcanic activity,

No, Paul, I live on O'ahu, but that quake was a 6.6, and it was felt all the way to Kaua'i. It didn't do any major damage on this island, but it was enough to knock Hawaiian Electric's generators out of wack, so all of the islands were without power most of Sunday. Without electricity, the pumping stations can't move water around the island either, and everything kind of falls apart. Fortunately it wasn't serious, and they got everybody back on line by the following morning. People on the Big Island had more structural damage, and some landslides, but as far as I know no one was hurt.

It was centered about 10 miles off Kailua-Kona, rather than where the volcanic activity is taking place, which is what I would have thought too. They described it as plate slippage, much like the San Andreas fault in California. I grew up in CA, so I'm used to (mild) earthquakes, but this was about as strong as I've ever experienced. We don't get that kind too often, but we do have an occasional quake.

We actually had a lot worse damage early in the year due to unremitting heavy rains and flooding, and then six months of drought....... I guess it's been a bad year for weather all around, by the sound of it!
