To comfort our good friend, Lisa

My dear Lisa, after the earthquake in Hawaii, and for what you have done for us here,

I would like to comfort you by registering my new cutivar

of Cryptanthus reverse 'Elaine' after your name.

Actually, we had talked about it,

but I think this plant could be one of the most striking Cryptanthus on earth.

I had checked with Dr Larry and he has agreed that it appears to be

an exciting new cultivar and also absolutely worth registering.

For the meaning : The sharming brown leaves with silver grey crossbands

mean your life with a lot of great experiences;

The solid red median stripes mean your power of love on your beloved

Ken and Bromeliads.

"...Ladies & Gentlemen....Cryptanthus 'Lisa Vinzant'..."

Oh my goodness, Stephania, I hardly know what to say!

That is so very sweet of you, and of course I would be thrilled to have such a beautiful cultivar named for me! Soon people can grow it next to their 'Ken Vinzant' (now my eyes are starting to get watery too, Kim!)

After some bad weather up here in Western NY,a freak snowstorm unheard of in October, flooding storms in the Texas Gulf Coast, and earthquakes in Hawaii, this is the very best cheery news.
    Couldn't have better timing!
    Congratulations Lisa,well deserved.
Thank you Stephania for being so thoughtful.
Sometimes the Sun shines thru in spite of it all.

    With a great pleasure !
And I think our calamitious world do need a comprehensive courage, from all.

By the way, I promise here, next fall, both of my new cultivar,
Cryptanthus 'Dennis Cathcart' and Crypt. 'Lisa Vinzant' will be donated to the Cryptanthus Society and taken in the auction of annual show in US via Dr Larry.

Gee, you're really all broken up about this, hdd! ;-)

Seriously, I am very moved by this gesture. I have to say, in all honesty, that occasionally someone will want to attach my name to some so-so unnamed hybrid they've gotten from me, and I generally try to discourage them as tactfully as I can because if I thought it deserved a name I would have given it one myself, and I don't want to be remembered for my culls. In addition, it is considered poor form to name one of your own hybrids after yourself, so that is something I will never do.

These Crypts, on the other hand, are absolutely gorgeous cultivars that anyone would be proud of, and I'm sure Dennis Cathcart will be equally pleased with his namesake! I am honored to be in such good company, but the thing that means the most to me is that now Ken and Lisa can still be together long after we're both gone. :-)

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm gonna cry again.....

Im broken up because we cant get the wonderful Lisa plants here in Texas...I dunno what your referring to.

I was teasing you because you posted the same thing twice, so you must REALLY be sad, hdd! ;-)

I don't understand why it would be any more difficult for you to get them than for someone in another part of the country, though. Eventually Michael and others will have them.

oh my idont know why that posted twice and it will be years before we get them due to limited avail and being released at a sale in florida. Im still hoping for C. KV also

    beautiful crypt!

Btw, forgive my ignorance, Lisa, but do you actually live on the 'Big Island'? I was sort of surprised by the quake but then again not ... after all that is still an active volcanoe chain. Didn't have any quakes worth mentioning during my time on Oahu. [Not that I'm complaining....]

Hey...Paul How did you colour your massage brown ?!

About the earthquake, as you mentioned. I also asked my German friend, Dr Joachim Saul, a bromeliad collector and also a seismologist, he told me that...

"... This was a big and unusual quake indeed. But no big damage.
Big quakes can happen in Hawaii but this big is rare. ....
I think it was due to vulcanic activity,
will be interesting to see if there will be any major eruption..."

Lisa...I'm really grateful for the happiness you & Ken have.
I promise, he will see the real Cryptanthus 'Lisa Vinzant' soon, as Mrs Nongporn has committed myself to bring both of them to you before the end of this year.

No, Paul, I live on O'ahu, but that quake was a 6.6, and it was felt all the way to Kaua'i. It didn't do any major damage on this island, but it was enough to knock Hawaiian Electric's generators out of wack, so all of the islands were without power most of Sunday. Without electricity, the pumping stations can't move water around the island either, and everything kind of falls apart. Fortunately it wasn't serious, and they got everybody back on line by the following morning. People on the Big Island had more structural damage, and some landslides, but as far as I know no one was hurt.

It was centered about 10 miles off Kailua-Kona, rather than where the volcanic activity is taking place, which is what I would have thought too. They described it as plate slippage, much like the San Andreas fault in California. I grew up in CA, so I'm used to (mild) earthquakes, but this was about as strong as I've ever experienced. We don't get that kind too often, but we do have an occasional quake.

We actually had a lot worse damage early in the year due to unremitting heavy rains and flooding, and then six months of drought....... I guess it's been a bad year for weather all around, by the sound of it!

We were writing at the same time, Stephania, so I didn't see your message.

I'm very excited to see the new Crypt, and of course a 'Ken Vinzant' will be traveling back your way, along with a xNeophytum 'Andromeda'. Any plans of coming for a visit yourself?
