Aechmea chantinii, zebrina, tessmanii, etc in Brisbane

Hi all,

I hear mixed reports about the success of growing the following Aechmeas in Brisbane without a greenhouse over winter:

Aechmea chantinii (and all it's hybrids and cultivars)

Aechmea retusa (and all it's hybrids and cultivars)

Aechmea tessmanii (and all it's hybrids and cultivars)

Aechmea contracta

Aechmea brevicollis

Aechmea zebrina(and all it's hybrids and cultivars)

Aechmea filicaulis

Aechmea (Chevaliera) tayoensis

Aechmea (Chevaliera) magdalenae varigata

Is this true? Has anyone had any particular trouble growing these plants outdoors in Brisbane during the winter months? Has anyone grown these very succesfully outdoors in Brisbane without any difficulty? If so, what conditions do you provide? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.
