How would I go about mounting a Tillandsia cyanea to a piece of wood or a rock?

You can just glue it on, it does not seem to harm the plant.

Take some fine, stretch netting like garlic bulbs or onions come in and cut a nice square patch that would encompass the root-ball as it lays against the wood. Pack some damp sphagnum moss around the roots, lay the netting on top and tack it down with brads or staples. You can also use fishing line to wrap around the roots and wood a few times to secure the plant. With the plant out of it's pot you really should keep an eye on not letting the plant dry out. Eventually roots should adhere to the mounting.

Unlike most Tillandsias, T. cyanea seems to do better in a pot than mounted. It can be grown mounted, just as you can grow Neos, Aechmeas and other epiphytic types that way, but extra care is needed to make sure it doesn't dry out too much. Gonzer's suggestion of sphagnum moss around the roots will help, as will keeping the humidity high.

I mounted one on wood with a recessed area for the soil mixture

Mine was in a tiny pot, and kept tipping over. I didn't want to overpot it and I thought it would look cool mounted, so I decided to try it. Plus, it just finished flowering and I wanted to make room for the off-sets

Mine is mounted on a large piece of wood, and has been there for a couple of years. It's happy as a clam, and has become very large -- but we are in a cool, humid, coastal climate, and it is dunked regularly at that.

I tied mine to a small piece of bogwood,i used thin netting to secure the sphagnum moss around the root ball, then i bound it together with fishing line, after a few months i cut the line and mesh off, the roots had taken firm hold of the wood, i mist it every 2 days; I heard of dunking method, much quicker and effective way of watering, is this true?

The mesh and moss is how they are sold mounted. But i agree they do better in pots. Care like a brom rather than as a air plant.
