Diseased Brugmansia?

Posted by cdplayeron Canada (My Page) on

I am totally new to Brugmansias. I have two. They were given to me. One appears to be doing find although it loses a lot of leaves.

The older one is the one I am most concerned about. The leaves are turning yellow and falling off. I noticed on the back of one of the leaves there was a white web like substance on it.

Thank you for any suggestions or comments.

By the way, I noticed there are small black bugs on the underside of the leaves.

Looks and sounds like spider mites, to me.

Cheers!

Go to the main part of this forum, (click on the word Discussions at the top of this page) and you will find several posts already there with info on how to handle Spider Mites.

There are several suggestions and you need to get the mites under control or they will spread to you other Brug and can actually do them in if left untreated.

Thanks Ruth Ann for the pointer!

Theres tons of data in that area about sick Burgs!

Well I guess a little soap and water won't hurt :)

Who would think I would be giving a plant a bath! LOL!

Cheers!

I doubt soap and water ( as in dish soap or insecticidal soap will deter your Spider Mites much at all except to do only a temporary fix.

Every one is suffering from these insects this year and in the 7+ years I have grown Brugs, this is the first time I have had to deal with them outdoors ever, let alone in the proportions I have them this year!
If the insects don't do more than 'blemish' my leaves, I usually co-exist with them but I am about to wage war on these mites!!!
I have tried:
frequent spraying with sharp jets of water
Endall
Insecticidal soap
all with little effect.

This week I tried a Jerry Baker remedy and have the best results thus far this season.... will reapply this evening which is 5 days after the first one and will do again in another 5 days.

The recipe was:
Ammonia Antidote* Once a week
1 tsp dish soap , not detergent
2 tsp ammonia
2 gallons water

I have horticultural oil so I used that as the surfactant rather than the dish soap but applied the spray after sunset ... the leaves were in the sleep position so it was easier to reach the undersides of them..... and the sun was down so the leaves had time to dry before the sun hit them again and the oil would be super heated and cause damage.

Oh Ruth Ann!

I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems with spider mites! I hope that you beat those mites back to where they came from. Yesterday I blasted the leaves on my Brug with water which, appears to have helped. This morning I use a insecticidal soap made by a company named Green Earth. http://www.greenearth.ca This evening I noticed that the leaves are returning to their deep green color. Even if this stuff does not totally get rid of the mites I would be grateful if the soap just gives the Brug a short vacation from the mites. So far, no leaves have fallen. Whew! My fingers are crossed!

Thank you Ruth Ann for giving me Jerry Baker’s remedy. If I don’t get the results I desire from the insecticidal soap I will have to whip up a batch of Jerry’s brew :).

Ruth Ann, when one uses soap and water should one rinse the soap off of the plant with water or is it OK to leave the soap on Brug?

I hope you are enjoying your weekend!
Thank you for your great suggestions!

Elton

Elton, you leave the insecticidal soap and water on the leaves so that it smothers the insects there at the time and acts as a deterrent until it gets washed off by the rain/sprinklers... at which time it needs to be reapplied if you still have the insect problem.

You need to do another spraying twice more, 5 days apart to get the Spidermites as it doesn't work on all stages of the mites.
