Studfinder:
a stud is one of the smaller usually wooden uprights in a wall, to which the wall material, wall boards, is attached.
There is a tool that contains a magnet in a metal container. You place that tool against the wall and when the magnet clicks against the metal container you know that the magnet is directly over a drywall screw or nail, making it easy to find the stud. This is good for instance if you want to attach something heavy on that wall, but you don't want to just attach it to the drywall.

There are some very sophisticated studfinders on the market now, but that is beyond me.
I'm sure there are better explanations, but this is my simple housewife-version. and that's all that Lucy will need.
