It is hard without a picture. The only two trees that come to mind are
1. Kaffir Plum (or Wild Plum), and
2. Mulberry Tree.

I agree with Ingrid sound like a mulberry, did you notice the leaf at all? were they compound or single oval or lancolate?

The mulberry is diappearing from our area, people hate the 'bird mess' and suckering. But as far as I am concerned, seeing the trees covered in oriols is worth the wash up when they are gone

I know what mulberries look like. They're all over here to the point of being invasive. Besides that I already got the ID, a Ligustrum lucidum. This one must have been fairly old and had been pruned to a single large trunk. I wish I'd gotten seeds. It might have made an interesting bonsai.

Karyn, I wouldn't have guessed Ligustrum, but I can clearly see it now. I have three Ligustrum japonicum in my front yard that are shapped into three balls each, one ball on top of the other. Right now they badly need trimming again. They call them "privet" here. It should be easy for you to find one in a nursery. Seeds, I don't know.

Ingrid alot of people grow Ligustrum japonicum here as well and shape it in a similar fashion. I'm also more familiar with it being called privet. This tree looked nothing like what I was used to seeing. Maybe if it had been in bloom when I saw it I might have guessed but even then I doubt it. This looked like some big shade tree. Even though L. japonicum is hardy here L. ludicum isn't.

OOO I hate the blooms they give me a headache.. My neighbor in GA planted 30 of them.. OMG!!
