Tall lanky Brugmansia

I received a cutting about 2 years ago and it grew well. There were 2 stems that got pretty tall. Last summer I put it out and it got about 6 feet tall but no flowers so I cut it in half thinking it may branch out and flower and I rooted the 2 pieces I cut. It has been inside since last fall and the 2 main stems are about 8 ft tall, the 2 smaller ones I rooted are about 2 feet tall.

I just read recently that they branch out into a "Y" and then flower above that. How can I get it to flower? I was thinking of cutting it again and planting it in the ground.
