question on freezing

My CG froze to the ground this year & I didnt think he would. If the top half of the brug freezes hard, will it draw the freeze down the branch to the ground?

This is what happened. Last year we had about 5 days of 22 degree & 7-10 days of 25-30 degree, I covered well & it held 1/2 of the leaves over winter. This year it was taller & harder to cover so I thought this would be a test year. We has 2 days of 25 degree & 2-3 days of 30 & I just lightly covered the bottom half to ensure the thickest (2+ inches) branches would survive. I thought they were thick enough & covered with a little burlap, shouldn't they have survived?

Next year they may look stupid but I am going to cover the branches with pipe insulation as far as I can reach.
