How do I make this beautiful?

I picked this up at the plant swap today and have never grown an Angel's Trumpet before, what should I do to make this plant happy and healthy? Is this how it should look right now? It looks like it's potted in garden soil, should it go in the ground or into a pot? A total Brug newbie here, any help would be most eagerly appreciated.

I'm only a bit less of a brug newbie, but my first thought is the poor thing must be rootbound. It needs a larger container and good soil that holds moisture. They don't like to be soggy or dry. I'm sure someone will answer you more fully soon.
