It is a: Orangedog caterpillars

They are present from July to October and They are considered a pest to citrus trees.

He will be a Giant Swallowtail Butterfly when he grows up. I get lots of them here. If you touch them they will send up thier red antennae and release a stinky smell to scare off thier predators lol. My kids think its fun to do that. We call them the bird poo crews because that's what they look like :D

Yes SJN is right. Thats the one I had last year that scared the crap out of John with the red things flying out of its head. They do look like bird poop. I wish I knew it was a swallowtail before John got ahold of it. He said it attacked him, lol. I will watch for them now.

Citrus in Zone 8? What varieties are you guys growing? I have been researching for planting some in downtown Dallas and any input would be most welcome. Am getting conflicting info and am befuddled.

Sandy I think Satsumas and kumquats are among the most cold hardy citrus. I would research those two and see if they would suit your likes and area. My dh is crazy for the Meiwa Sweet Kumquats.

Sour Oranges are also pretty hardy that is what many citrus are grafted onto.

Satsuma's are awesome.. Can't buy them there but I have one I picked up at DD in LA.. LOL John scared of a cat!! LMAO
