You can grow them any way you like! Some folks like a tree from, other angels want to grow bushy. It's all in your preference. If you let it grow bushy, you might get more blooms. Good luck!

For me, every leaf is a food processing plant that contributes to a plants general health.
When the plants get large and begin blooming it can be difficult to keep them well fed enough that they don't lose leaves, so having extras just make sense to me.

cearbhaill is right- angels need their leaves for photosynthesis. But many folks like to show off their blooms in tree form.

Well, my thinking is that the plant will grow taller if the bottom leaves/stems are removed. The plant putting more energy into the top growth if the bottom growth is removed.

Last, note you are in a Zone 8. Zone 6 here really limits the growing season and I want the most out of my plant. If cutting bottom growth promotes taller growth and eventually flowering, then so be it.

Last year I let the bottom growth grow, and all I got was a bush of leaves. Not 1 flower.....:-(

Is that the usual way of things or did Rubby just get unlucky?

I didn't trim my plants last year and I had a banner year for blossoms. First year cuttings don't usually get blossoms until fall although I have had some blossom as early as late June. Usually only a couple of blossoms at first. I really doubt that trimming them will get you blossoms sooner only less blossoms.

Are brugs like trees?
In that they grow thicker trunks if the lateral limbs are left on and removed later on in the plants life?
I was always taught that removing lower limbs too early made for tall, skinny, weak whips.
I want a thick, sturdy wood framework on my brugs.
