That's a beautiful aristolochia. I'm never lucky enough to have something like that pop up in my yard, even at the farm. I think it's called A. erecta. If you decide to collect any seeds can I please trade you something for a few of them?

Thanks Karyn and Siam, I was thinking of you when I posted this. The lawn is Buffalo Grass where we let wildflowers grow. It is only mowed once a year in the fall, so they are safe and I will watch for seeds. I took a walk in the field where I find so many native plants today, but did not see any more of these.

Gardeners all around Central Texas have spotted them from time to time, but they are apparently rare.

I looked the A. erecta up in the Wildflower database. It is a perennial and makes huge seed pods. Since it returns from the roots, I should be easily able to collect seeds for trading without losing the originals. :-)

This reminds me, it's probably a good time to look for Karyn's milkweed. We have had an awesome year for wildflowers and natives except for p. incarnata which apparently did not make it through our cold winter.

It is one of the rarer aristolochias and highly sought after. Virginia Snakeroot (Aristolochia serpentaria) is the only native aristolochia that grows here and I've never seen it growing wild.

Speaking of milkweed my Oxypetalum caeruleum (Tweedia) made loads of pods this year. It's my favorite milkweed and has beautiful blue star shaped flowers.

I lost my P. incarnata the year before last when we had an unseasonably cold winter.

Checked again this morning and there are four more plants there preparing to bloom so that's pretty good odds to get seeds.
