I thought I'd save on buying labels so I bought Surveyor's tape. I'd label them, then I'd tie them around brug stems. The other day I noticed one of my nice Creamsickles wilting badly, so I watered it. It appeared to recover, then wilted again the next day. I finally decided to dig it up and take a look, and I found that as the plant grew, the tape had strangled it, and then the plant rotted. No worries- I cut it up into 3 very nice hardwood cuttings and am rooting them now. So I took today to inspect and re tie all of my brug plants, which is quite a feat, since I have almost 200 of them. I had to re-adjust the tape to an upper stem on a few of them. Well worth doing! Some of my brugs are starting to bloom. Anyone know what caterpillar this is? Thanks!

Your yard is so pretty and the brugs look great. I'm surprised that the tape strangled the stems. I occasionally use the green tree tape and it stretches as the stems grow. I thought surveyor's tape did the same thing. I have no idea what that cat is. If nobody here gives you an ID just post on the butterfly forum.

I did that too lol. I also noticed the sharpie on the tape will fade pretty quickly if in the sun. I started using the cut up mini blinds with pencil writing and they worked great until I got the chickens. The little terds pulled up all those tags. So now I think I will have to use the soft tin that you can write on and put it on the branches with loose wire.

I really love the look of your brug gardens! They look so healthy and wild :)

I love using the blinds also. I'm such a fanatic about making sure my babies are properly ID'd, I tie on the tape and use blinds too, so there's no mistakes. Thanks girls! Glad you enjoyed them.

Woah, woah, woah! I hope I'm not doing anything wrong either. I wrapped a stem around the base stem of my brug with rope. It didn't dig into the stems and the plant looks normal still. Is this safe or should I take the rope out?
