I have no suggestions for the grasshopper problem. If the brug is small I probably wouldn't cut it back much unless space is an issue. I'd just remove all the foliage. The thinner green stems will likely wither. You can deal with the dry stems in the spring. Oftentimes the withered portions will fall off on their own once new growth starts in the spring. Be sure it is the grasshopper. I had some tiny tiny green worms. I liked to have never found them. Sprayed with pyrethem and you should have seen the tiny green worms fall to the ground. I hope it is not them. They blend in with the leaf and you can hardly see them.

The pests are horrid this year here too! Something's eating the blooms off of my scarlet runner bean and buds off my corkscrew vines before they even open! :(
