Datura: Propagate Cuttings or (Just) Use Seeds - Now or Later ?

After reading and reading, I finally distinguished my 'large white moonflower' plant as Datura, which grew profusely in this hot summer. I cut it back a few times and put some pieces in water and sand/peat w/Rootone (experimenting) over the months, and all 'mushed' or rotted (perhaps alternating high heat and rain/humidity impacted).

I just cut back major pieces to allow the mums underneath to emerge. From what I've read, I'm still not sure trying to root cuttings would be worthwhile. Meanwhile, I've been collecting the seeds/pods.

If I can propagate stem cuttings, do I do anything different than w/other cuttings (I do a range of shrubs, as as above)? AND, can I by chance get any of the seeds to sprout/form roots in pots yet this fall for bloom next Spring/Summer (I'd like to give them as gifts)?

Thank you for any/all info and advice -

D.
