Its nearing pruning time so my brug will fit inside this winter. is there a preferred area to cut them back to. i do this every year but i'm just curious if there is a "best" way to trim.

Sort of depends on how and where you are storing them.
I trim mine to 5-6 feet tall hat racks (with a single trunk) since I have room for about 4 or 5 of these in my garage.

Do you ever put anything on the cut to keep it disease free?

rober49 I saved your picture you send me, wanted to post it but for some strange reason I can not find it yet. It might have to do with the fact that I just can not think straight right now and do not spend much time on my feet.

Just remember that to make your cut about 5-6 eyes(where the leaves grew along the stem)away from the stem that remains. Since it will dry up and you do not want it to go all the way to the connecting stem.

I never put anything on the cuts. It dries out quickly. But then I am in TX.

sianna,
i would not worry too much about an open cut on the brug . i think more times than not the clippers people use cuase more desease and virus problems . if the trimmers are not properly cleaned , then its simple to pass a virus from one plant to another .

i use a strong bleach / water solution and then torch the clippers .

If the cut starts looking like it's rotting, I cut it again, then put Listerine on the wound til it heals & hardens over- works every time!

You can, and I sometimes do, use cinnamon as an antifungal. I usually only do it if the weather is exceptionally humid and bound to stay that way. (Could be months here in Houston).
