You add perlite to soil to improve drainage. I sometimes use straight perlite for thin green brug cuttings, passiflora or other thin stem cuttings in a covered container but don't not for rooting mature stem brug cuttings. If you don't want to root your brug cuttings in soil or water then try long fiber sphagnum or rock wool cubes but soil works just fine. Brugs are very easy to root and don't need any special medium. Heck they'd probably root in moistened shredded cardboard.

Not a dumb question at all, it's important to get advice if you don't know and how to root cuttings is something you have to learn about. The dumb thing is if you don't ask.

That's great that you got the perlite. It takes real dedication to go that far for it.

Perlite is tiny white stryofoam looking particles that are an ingredient to soil less potting mixtures. What you have doesn't sound like Perlite. But Karen is right- Brugs root easily, just don't overwater them. Sorry if I made is sound so hard!

The way she's describing what happens to perlite in water makes sense and I'm sure that's what she has. Perlite is a heat expanded silica (glass) product produced from volcanic rock. It's extremely light and porous. It will hold a small amount of water and is good for rooting in a covered container. Uncovered the water evaporates very quickly. I don't use it for larger brug cuttings because they don't do well in a covered container with high humidity. Like everyone said there's no such thing as a stupid question. How else are you going to learn?
