Y Question

I will be wintering my brugs soon. If I make cuttings below the Y's and root them,they will flower before the cutting below that, is that correct? I will be taking the Y's that are at the top of the brug. As long as the temps don't get below freezing, I guess that is when the frost occurs will they be alright outside? I'm afraid it will get too cold to see all the blooms open. I have blooms on all of them now and I'm sure it will be some time in nov until they open completely. One more question, next spring will these brugs flower sooner than this year? This is the first year for blooms, if they don't freeze first! Thanks Ellen

In theory cuttings that contain a Y or are taken from above the first Y will bloom sooner then those taken below. This usually holds true but there's always those pesky exceptions for unknown reasons. Make sure that your cuttings have at least a few inches of mature stem at the base. The more the better. Thinner green stems can be rooted but it's usually more difficult and they are more susecptible to rot. It's almost impossible not to root mature stem cuttings.

I leave my brugs out when nighttime temps drop to the high 30's and they normally don't suffer any damage but growth pretty much comes to a halt. Even when they're hit with a light frost you only lose foliage and the tips of the branches which are usually trimmed off when you store them for the winter. Being in zone 7b you can probably leave your plants in the ground with a good mulch and they'll come back in the spring. I'd take cuttings to be on the safe side but it would sure be nice to be able to leave them inground.

It is nice to leave them in the ground..BUT you set the bloom time back especially here in TX where the Summers are so dang hot and RAIN whats that?..LOL I have a couple that I leave out but they are just now blooming..

Thanks Karyn, It's good to know that I can leave them outside until the high 30's since buds are getting bigger and it sure would be nice to see blooms before it gets too cold. My Inca Sun has lots of buds,and two have completely open with 6 or 7 starting to. It will be so nice to see multiple blooms instead of just 1 at a time! I have two in the ground which I think I will take cuttings from but leave there, mulch real good, and pray it makes it!!Ellen

I never thought about setting back the blooms when I planted my first brug out this year. It's in shade, so that's pretty good (I hope). It was getting too big to keep in a pot so out it went.

Sometimes we don't even get a hard freeze here and then there was last year's record cold so I'm taking cuttings just in case.
