I just really love looking at the pics of the brugs and the gardens. I can't wait to have my gardens look like some of these! LOL

What is that purple leafed plant at the foot of your yellow brug? It looks like the same kind as some in the pics that wildflower posted too.

those, GG, my friend are sweet potato vine.
I even had an extra bonus at chop time, I got to eat some sweet potatoes!. Nice. And the rest of the tubers I saved for next year!

Well!! How embarassing! I should have known. :) I thought that it looked familiar, but sat here and couldn't figure it out. I had some in some of my planters and hanging baskets and wasn't sure if I wanted to bring them in for the winter (space issues!) I love the look of them as a filler under the brug. Guess I better get those plants in before they are so frozen that they are not saveable.
    How are you saving them?

    Lois

  • oxmyx

Lois, I remember having a sweet potato in the fridge for months, and it started sprouting in the spring, so that is what I will do. If it gets a bit soft or shriveled, I will put it is peat moss and an open plastic bag, to conserve moisture.

BTW I also am growing the plants indoors. just chopped them to small plants, they are doing fine.

Oxmyx-yours looks like mine but are your leaves serarated. What is it? And are you saying I can plant a yam and get those purple vines??? Or is there another sweet potato out there?

Beautiful flowers everyone, like the long tendrils too. This thread will be worth looking at all winter long. So keep 'em coming. Wasn't gonna let this thread slip out. Ya'all are welcome.
And now for my more selfish reasons...drum roll please

I just love this brug. The flowers are 12" long, and 6-7"wide. This whole tree grew from one 10" cutting in 6 months. Yes, 6 months.
This was it's 1st flush the 2nd flush the tree was another 1' taller but not all the buds got to bloom. Very fragrant.
It took a while to Y and I kept the 3 main branches in a pot for next year right up to their first y. Huge root system. It'll be taller next year. I suppose it would of Y'd and bloomed earlier if I had only let 1 or 2 branches grow. I'll probably only allow 2 branches off the top of each main branch next year, maybe only 1. Be prepared to twist your neck a lil...and this coming from a metal necked woman. So sorry bout that. But the granddaughter, Adrienne (5 1/2yrs) surely would be worth the trouble.

Healthy Happy Smart & Beautiful Adrienne & of coarse the brug. Direct Link Type Pic

Now twist the neck the other way...still a foot shorter then she grew for it's second flush. HTML Type Pic

I'll post more when I know how these 3 tags work.

These are my Frosty pink and unknown white brugs.

This is just one season's growth after being frozen to the ground in a January 2007 freeze (low 20 degrees for about a week--something rare for us in z9 CA). Photo taken Nov 11 and it is still blooming as of today.

    ...........................................
    Sandy
Mine is a noid. But from what I can gather it is probably Dr. Seuss or Charles Grimaldi, Both, as far as I can tell, although there seams to be some controversy over this, have serrated leaves.
Yours does look like mine -as mine also turns to peach from yellow.

Sweet Potatoes are not yams, and generally have decorative foliage, but have been improved over the years. There are many colors and leaf shapes, even a variegated, I believe.

Hey Central, Nice big frilly brugs in that first picture. Look a bit like mine except mine didn't open that much...maybe next year it'll show itself to be a frosty after all.

And none of my pic's are showing...why? Just joined photobucket, do you think that's why? I can copy and paste each URL address into my browser and 2 work but not the 1st option which was for Email etc. Don't quite know what to use yet. Sorry bout all this - All that boasting and no show... head hung low - Sandy

In case the pictures don't ever come in, here's a link for the close up to copy and paste. Direct link type pic.

Oxmyx - mine goes from a yellow to a tangerine as you can see in the close up shot. Not a speck of pink in mine which would make for the peach color.

Hey Mike - I saw your picture of Frosty in another thread which made me disown mine as one...mine has much brighter pink on the edges and yours has that porcelain shine as well. I'll be posting mine as soon as I figure out the link thing. Thanks for the compliment... it's my first baby brug that ever grew up and bloomed first for me. It's one big brug though. Either a CG or it's better than.

For all that it is...I only get 1 flower for every Y it makes in it's branches so next year I hope it doesn't need to grow 4' to Y. I only cut off the top branches so it aught to be a good 8' before it Y's and that's allowing for some branch die off from overwintering. Just so you know...there was more peat moss and compost in that area then the rest of the garden and it got only after 1pm direct sun - the small shed blocks early sun but that helps keep it drinking longer.

gottahosta - that is one beautiful white you got there

tng Nice Photography, you are quick with that camera of yours. Truly beautiful, I spent a good 1/2 hour looking at your garden images. Even interesting insects!
I got a good look at the Serrated Brug and wondered if that was Dr. Seuss. I also noticed how similar the Datura looking plant, DSC_8003-RC.jpg, you have with white flowers and purple centers,
is to your serrated brug. I remember growing that a long time ago but didn't remember I had grown it. Reminded me of Malva. What is it?

  • oxmyx

Chena Ahhh Tiara! that is beautiful, and so is the Iochroma. I want to give this a shot. is it a prolific bloomer? easy to grow to flower in one season?

  • chena

LOL.. Barry will you trade me a piece of that???!! Pretty Please!!!

  • oxmyx

  • tngreenthumb

    Barry,

The serrated brug in that set of pics is Becca Lynn. At least I think that's the one you are referring to. (DSC_9230-RC & DSC_9240-RC?)

8003 is Datura stramonium. Jimson weed. It was a volunteer from the field our house was built on and I let it have it's way. Made a nice looking plant by the end of the year and would have dozens of blooms every night. Plus the deeply serrated leaves made nice foliage. The blooms are much smaller than most dats.

Oh, and by the way, thanks. Photography has become my primary passion these days.

  • sandysseeds007

Oxmyx - Your playing with too many people. lol
Until someone finds enough money to be made in DNA sequencing a brug or gene swapping to make a brug accept purple it shall probably remain 'the ever elusive purple brug'. You have some awesome pictures in your gallery #3 it needs it's own thread for comments and inquiries.

Brugmansia Forum posters: You all have some awesome flowers growing out there.

I posted the supposed 'Frosty' on the 'brug with datura post' as well as the 2 water jugs I mentioned somewhere with the red impatience and triple yellow daturas which only show one bloom. They sit on a spring lily bed that died back. Too much data to post here and I still can't get my pics too show. If anybody has a link to an updated method for doing this it would be nice to have posted in the general forum area. I did a search and read photobucket and can't see where I went wrong so I can't post the links I found.

It is from http://www.kirchner-abel.de they have the most red one I have ever seen! it is for real! like a tomato,
    It is called Super Spot.

    SandySeeds:

Here are the instructions from Gardenweb for posting a picture.

Display the image in the message itself using formatting codes (an html image "tag").

    1. Type <img src=" file location and name"> in the body of the message.

For example: If your graphic is at wherever/~smith/garden/habanero.jpg,

      you would insert <img src="http://www.wherever.com/~smith/garden/habanero.jpg">;.

    1. Add an extra return above or below the image to group it with the appropriate text.

Yes, you should see the pictures in your preview. Note the quotes. I hope this helps you.

  • technodweeb

Sandyseeds - this would be if you posted your pictures to photobucket.

Do not do this if the image is not yours at photobucket or something like that.

If you want someone to see a link to someone else's page - just put in the url - don't imbed someone else's image from someone else's web site. Forgot to mention that to you.

  • chena

Iochroma is easy to grow... I have only had this one a yr or so.. It bloomed in the house sitting in the window when it was but 20"? tall.. It held out till the temps really cooled off to bloom again.. but they held forever. Karyn said hers bloomed all summer.. What about yours Karma?

  • technodweeb

Chena - can the Iochs still stay healthy at 55 or so? Karyn told me that they don't go into dormancy - so could I keep them active at 55 or so inside? With light?

  • oxmyx

I am courious TD how you were able to put the html tags there in the post without having them disappear.
    is it a tag?

  • tngreenthumb

Barry: My first camera was a Fuji S602z. They are out of production now but they have similar, newer generation "pro-sumer" cameras out now. I used that one for about 18 moths before upgrading to a Nikon D70 DSLR. All of that #3 gallery is with the D70. I've had it for about two and a half years now.

Over time I have acquired quite a few lenses for it, most from eBay. My wife recently said she thinks its time to move up to a "more pro level" camera since I've been doing some portrait work. Is it any wonder why I married her? *grin*

Also, it helps to make use of Photoshop or some kind of image editing program to punch them up a bit. Every image in my galleries has been touched up at least a little. Usually just increasing contrast and color saturation, plus a little sharpening after reducing for web use.

    Hope this helps.

  • oxmyx

Me too! TNG that is why my images look good, One of my passions is photo restoration, done quite a few from a scanner. It is amaising what you can achieve with great program like Photoshop, and a few dvd tutorials.
